Divide into elements!

pg.64 : Meditations : Book 11 if you hear a pleasing song and dance and you are captivated by it- well, will you do one thing? if you will distribute the melody of voice into several sounds- and ask yourself - If you are still captivated by it? if you will divide the dance into small movements will you still be captivated by it? In all things, then except virtue and acts of virtue remember to apply yourself to their several parts! and by this division  -you will come to value them little! My note: When something captivates you by its appearance: divide it into its elements : to assess the real value!

Common Good!

Common Good! pg.64 : Marcus Aurelius : Book 11 have I done something for the common good? well, then I have had my reward! Let this always be present in my mind and never stop doing such good! For such an act itself is the reward!

Dont Say - do!

pg.66 : marcus aurelius book 11:  Don't just Say! Do! how insincere is he: who says? I have determined to deal with you in a fair way what are you doing man? There is no reason to give this notion! Show by Act instead! Just like a beloved reads it in the eyes of the lover! Just like a bystander - who can smell !!! you out to travel with you or not! the fair person's character - immediately shows in the eyes!!!

Branch off the Tree

Branch off the Tree!  pg.65 Book 11 : Marcus Aurelius :  A branch - that is cut off the from adjacent branch is cut-off from the Tree as well! so too a man, separated from another man has fallen off from the whole social community A branch-somebody else cuts it off but - the man - separates himself from his neighbor! when he hates him and turns away from him at the same - cut himself off from the whole social system Yet as human, you have the privilege , unlike the branch! to grow again to that which is near us and to become a part that makes up the whole!

Being Courageous!

pg.68 : meditations: Marcus Aurelius: Book 11 Being Courageous means: to avoid flattering others! To avoid being moved by passion and anger! Such a person who possesses the above:  is made of strength, nerves, and courage! not the one who is subject to fits of passion and anger and discontent! Strength is freedom from all passion Weakness is the sense of pain and anger and who that yields to pain and anger both are wounded and both submit!

Life hacks

@ SahilBloom If you meet a jerk once a month, you've met a jerk! if you meet jerks every day, you're a jerk! Getting cheated occasionally is a small prize to pay for trusting the best in everyone; because when you trust the best in others, they'll treat you the best! Build your identity capital (Be!) Make your day! Dont let the day make you! Schedule your day! donr just respond to the invite from others! remaining 10% takes another 90% of time Give yourself permission to write badly!

9 Rules

If you feel,  anyone offended against you follow these 9 rules: 1. Consider that we are made for one another. I and every other is a part of the whole! 2. Consider what kind of people you sit with , at the table: what are their compulsions, pride, and opinions 3. If people have done wrong to you, they have done so  involuntarily and in ignorance 4. Consider that you also do many things  wrong due to cowardice, concern about reputation, or some such mean motive 5. Consider that you don't even understand if people are doing wrong or not. Everything you hear is an opinion; everything you see is your supposed perspective. 6. Consider this when you are vexed or grieved: man's life is only a moment 7. Consider that it is not other acts that disturb us, but it is our own opinions that disturb us. Take away those opinions- by reflecting that no wrongful act of another can bring shame on me. 8. Consider that pain brought on us by anger and vexation caused by such acts is much more than

One objective

Pg.69 Marcus Aurelius,  Meditations  Have a singular objective  Not only that Make that singular objective as one  That focuses on the common good If you do so You will make all your acts alike And will always be the same!!!

Socratic Questions

Socrates: what do you want? Me : the soul of a rational person  Socrates: of what rational person? Me: one of a sound mind Socrates: why then you not seek for them? Me: because I have them already! Socrates: why then do you fight or quarrel? Me: 😕😕😕😕

Acting with integrity

Acting with integrity is a choice  So is taking responsibility for your actions  Holding yourself accountable  Being honest and truthful with others Means being genuine ! Now it's up to you how to act!!! To do not so any of this.. But remember  To not work with honor creates effects Your choices are your choices  Your choices are initial causes of any consequences that will come later Law of Karma! Tony J Selimi

Indifferent

Choose to be indifferent  Yeah true You heard it right Be indifferent  To Things that are not the works of it's own activity Be indifferent  To future...leave to providence Be indifferent  To past...that's a life past us ! Be in the present ...alive With modesty, simplicity and honesty

Choose to delight yourselves

Marcus Aurelius; pg.35 Meditations When you wish to delight yourself Think of the virtues of those who live with you Activeness of one Modesty of another Positivity of the Third Some such good quality of Fourth For nothing delights so much as  The examples of virtues When they are exhibited in the morals of those  Who live with us and present themselves in abundance !!!

On Improving Life

@JamesClear Invert always Invert!...Carl Jacobi  1. Improve margin of leisure not margin of profit 2. Optimize for Time  not Optimize  for Money 3. Improve recovery instead of Efficiency

Expect vs Appreciate

@JamesClear  For those who expect everything  There are many curses awaiting For those who appreciate everything  There are many blessings awaiting  ------------------------------------------------------------------------- For those who expect everything  There are many complications to count For those who appreciate everything  There is many a gratitude to count!

Let it make no difference

pg.29 : Meditations Marcus Aurelius Let it make no difference to you Whether you are cold or warm whether you are drowsy or satisfied with sleep Whether ill-spoken or praised whether withering or growing All existing things will soon change and reduced to vapor The best way of avenging is not to become like wrong-doer Tit-for-tat is not the best strategy! Authors Marcus Aurelius

Take repose in philosophy

Take repose in philosophy pg.29 : Meditations : Marcus Aurelius When you are compelled by circumstances that make you disturbed do not continue out of tune longer than the compulsion lasts rather quickly return to yourself for you will have mastery over harmony by continually recurring to it If you had a step-mother and mother you would be dutiful to your step-mother but you would constantly return to your mother let the court and philosophy now be your step-mother and mother respectively! Return to philosophy frequently and repose in her through which what you meet in the court appears tolerable and you appear tolerable in the court! Authors Marcus Aurelius

Apperance and impressions

Beware of Apperance and impressions pg.30 : Meditations : Marcus Aurelius When you have meat on the plate, the impression, that it is enticing, tell yourself this is nothing but a dead body of fish or bird or cow This wine is just a little rotten grape juice This purple robe - sheep's wool dyed with the blood of shell-fish Such then are the impressions! (in yoga philosophy - its called Vrttis) so beware when things appear most worthy of our approbation we ought to lay them bare and look at their worthlessness and strip them of all the words by which they are exalted For the outward show is a wonderful perverter of reason and when you are most sure that you are employed about things worth your pains It is then that it cheats the most! Authors Marcus Aurelius

What do you admire?

What do you admire pg. 30 marcus aurelius Multitude admire - Things help by atoms - material stuff Stones, wood, fig trees, vines and olives A fewer admire - collection of living things - flocks and herds Even fewer admire - amuse - themselves with certain arts And very few - have a rational soul-aligned to the universal soul and conform themselves to reason and nature! Authors Marcus Aurelius

Time!

Time! Today , morning, as I just woke up a thought occurred to me I need to start protecting my time to do things that I always wanted to do! Time is the most precious commodity - not money! I need to protect my time - to do something useful to others! I think I have come to such a stage in my life - that its not about receiving anymore! I have received enough! God has been kind enough that he has given me enough! its now time for me to payback! by sharing - what I know , by doing, what I have !!! Authors mukund

Get out of your own way!

Get out of the way! pg.31 Meditations - Marcus Aurelius In the wrestling exercise, another man has torn you with nails inflicted a wound, dashed your head Do you suspect your opponent to be a treacherous fellow? Or treat as an enemy or with suspicion? No! - but you quietly learn to get out of the way and to deal with it let your behavior be like this in many parts of your life Let us overlook many things in those who are like antagonists in the Gym for its in our own power to get out of the way and to have no suspicion or hatred! Authors Marcus Aurelius

Take care that you are not made into Caesar!

Take care that you are not made into Caesar! Take care that you are not made into Caesar! pg.32, Marcus Aurelius, meditations Take care that you are not made into Caesar! that you are not dyed with this Dye - Caesar! Keep yourself simple, good , pure, serious, far from affections a friend of justice, worshipper of gods, kind affectionate, strenous in all acts Short is Life Revere gods ! help others! There is only one fruit of this earthly life! A pious disposition and Social Acts Authors Marcus Aurelius

The parallax error

The parallax error truth is the yardstick truth is the Ruler (scale) As you set out to define the length not only use the exact ruler but also use it well! if you are measuring the length from the sides rather than from the Top you will fall short or long Not only the truth is the yardstick you have to use the right prism to view the Truth! Authors mukund

What is a loss!

What is a loss! If you had lost Power,Position, Prosperity would you think of the loss as damage? and then if you lost modesty, moderation,        and gentleness would you think the loss as nothing? And yet the first things are lost by some cause external and independent of the Will and second by your own fault! As to the first, neither to have them nor to lose them is shameful As to the second,  not having them or losing them is disgraceful! -  a matter of reproach and misfortune! Authors Epictetus

mark out proper duties!

mark out proper duties! pg.154 : Stoic 6 pack Epictetus remember that you are a son or a daughter obey father in all Things cooperating with him as far as you can; remember that you are a brother make due concessions to your brother be ready to give the larger share of the Will! and similarly layout all your roles say you are a senator, you are a youth, you are an old man - mark out all the proper duties - and exercise them - never ever blame, moan or groan! My notes: this piece of Epictetus is similar to the karma-yoga concept that says -  Do your duty without expectations of reward! Authors Epictetus Patanjali

Cockscrew solutions

Cockscrew solutions It's like being nibbled to death by ducklings Ducklings here represent - problems, distractions, annoyances, worries, concerns and pain that take up space and energy of our brains problems take away the oxygen out of the lives and rob us of the energy and time to do important things in Life Ducklings are the symptoms we need to find the root-cause to weed them out To set the ducks in a row! Another analogy Unresolved problems are like the Pinballs that scatter thoughts and worries -metal balls and make it bounce inside our heads! causing worry! Authors Author

Be Do Have

Be Do Have What we  do We overestimate a day ;  and underestimate a year   In what we want to want to become we need to Optimize over a Year ;  and not optimize over a day!

Whole is superior to the Part

I think of it as a Zero-sum game A finite game Where the game ends But players to live on Others gain is my loss Other's loss is my gain (Schadenfreude) Mukund, Don't commit such a fraud on yourself And land in pain, greed, envy, and jealousy those Bads - the vices - that you shall absolutely loathe and stay away Don't focus on the "I" - its an Illness Focus on the "We" - that is Wellness Use your reason to understand nature that you are a part of the Whole And your purpose here is to serve the Whole you are like the Hand or Mouth to the Body That which does not serve itself but to the Body The whole is superior to the part! Service to others is service to god! Serve others and reach god Understand that Life is an infinite game Where game continues But the players change Authors mukund

Whole and Part

Whole and Part Golden sayings of Epictetus pg.154 You are Human Your faculty- unenslaved and free from subjection except that of Fortune! Consider then what separates you from beasts it is the faculty of reasoning you are a citizen of the World not the subservient but the Principal! A citizen of the World who holds nothing profitable to Himself To act with reference to Whole As hand or foot would do to the Body have reason and understand Nature's construction Desire nothing except with reference to the Whole Its all a universal arrangement And the whole is superior to the part Authors Epictetus
