Communication Skill is the aspect that a prospective candidate
need to possess apart from Technical Skill. It is a highly valued skill and is
considered the fundamental one for Future leaders. As college graduates, there
is an ample scope to find the avenues to improve the Oral & Written
Communication Skills.
Oral Communication:
We all
have been communicating since we learnt to speak from our childhood. The
problem though is communicating our thoughts to a global audience mostly in a
language that is not our mother tongue. This requires preparation & thought
such as :
1) Who
are my audience?
2) What
is the purpose of my presentation?
a. General
b. Specific
3) What
is the Summary?
4) Do
I need to persuade or Influence somebody with my presentation?
5) What
sort of questions that I should expect from the audience?
Learning to Communicate effectively is akin to Learning
Swimming or Cycling. You cannot learn it from Text-books alone. You need to
practice communication to an audience over a period of time. One of the
effective forums that you can use to
improve communication is the Toastmasters Club (www.toastmasters.org). .Another option
is to deliver seminar series during the Course work. The third option would be
to be take part in Technical Symposiums.
The common fear that prevented me and a host of others from
speaking to a group is the “Fear Of Failure”.
What if my English Skill is Poor?
What if am thrown with Tough
Questions?
What if people laugh at me?
These fears can be easily overcome with practice. And College
is a better place to Practice and Fail rather at the Job Interview. In the next post,Lets look at the Written Communication.
