Business of Philosophy

Pg. 164 Stoic 6 Pack— Epictetus
Business of a philosopher is not to merely study.
It is to be constant,
to be joyous,
to be in a state conformable to nature.
So if you are in a fever (physical or mental)
if you are a philosopher, you need to bear it well.
That is: not to blame God or Man,
not to be afflicted at that which happens,
to expect even death well and nobly.
When the physician comes in, not to be frightened at what he says,
nor if he says you are doing well, to be overjoyed
—for what is that to be ill?
Is it that you are near severance of soul and body?
What harm is there in this? (Hindu philosophy)& why do you not value a physician as you do a shoemaker
when mending a boot (chappal Ka Aspathaal) or a
Carpenter when he is building your house?

So treat the physician to the body:
which is not “you” or “yours” (externally) —
(what a beauty!)
Treat your body like
house/shoe/
other stuff

He who takes fever, has an opportunity (bearance)
to look after externals (house, shoe, body) with indifference (externally)
and keep his own ruling power!
