In what manner we ought to bear sickness

When the need of each opinion comeswe ought to have it in readiness. (Models to apply)

Epictetus- Discourses

Say I am in fever,
we should have ready such opinions on fever.
If I lose and forget all opinions on fever,
and think — I should not get fever at all !!!
(That's a wrong opinion) as
it's not in our power to prevent fever and not to stop it from coming!
So the right opinion in this: Say to yourself
it was for this I exercised myself
for this I disciplined myself
to show that I am strong when pain comes
to be borne well — measure well — the pain
and Endure well — the hunger and thirst and weariness
And this — remains it in within my power to bear it well!My thoughtsThis is a very practical Stoic exercise — preparing mental “models” or opinions in advance so you’re not caught off guard when something painful or uncomfortable happens (fever, pain, hunger, fatigue, etc.).
The core idea i'm capturing is :
  • It’s not realistic or helpful to think “I should never get sick/fever/pain.”
  • The useful opinion is: “I have trained myself precisely for moments like this.”
  • The goal shifts from avoiding the discomfort to bearing it well — with strength, endurance, and dignity.
This is Epictetus  style thinking:
  • Focus on what is within your power (your attitude, your response, your endurance).
  • Accept what is not in your power (the fact that fever or pain arrived).
