A true philosopher, my dear Lucilius,
Is like a high mountain
That appears less lofty from afar
But that clearly prove how high the peaks are
When you are near them;
A true philosopher is
True by his acts not by his tricks...
He stands in a high place, worthy of admiration
Lofty and really great
Does not stretch himself or walk or tiptoe
Like those who seek to improve their height by deceit
He is therefore above earthly things
Equal to himself- under all conditions!
Whether the current of life runs free
Or whether he is tossed and troubled!
Letters from a stoic
CXI pg 456 Seneca
