How to be Job Ready While In College?- Tips for college grads

One of the major concerns of Industries ranging from Information Technology to Engineering is the gap in the skill of graduates passing out of the Colleges. According to a McKinsey group survey only 25% of the graduates are considered employable. Despite several efforts taken between Academia & Industry ,the employability percentage has not gone up. In my humble opinion, a greater deal of this challenge can be addressed if College graduates start working on their skills on their own, of course with guidance from Professors & Mentors.

I have spent more than a decade working in the Industry till date and thought I can share my experience in the Corporate Sector. Following posts are targeted at College graduates on the steps that they need to take up to be “Organization Ready” at the end of their Course.

FIRST STEP :“How would you like your Resume to look like at the end of your Academics?”
Spend some time writing your ideal resume. So the Question would be  “At the end of your academic career How would you like your resume to read it be ?” . It should answer the following questions
-What would be your highest qualification?
                -What would be the grades?
-What would be the Certifications ?
-What would be the Industry trainings ?
-What would be the extra-curricular activities ?

The earlier you start this exercise the better. The earlier you complete your "dream resume" the better would be the clarity that would emerge on your Career. I should admit though that this exercise can become a tough one but definitely the most Important Step. This exercise requires involves thought process and discussion. I would suggest to seek help from your Mentors & Professors if you don’t have adequate clarity on some of the questions.
When you complete the “Ideal Resume”, It can become the blue-print of your Career. It would bring focus into the activities that you need to focus upon.
-Do I need to choose a Job or Pursue Higher Education?
-If higher education, in What Field? Where …India or Abroad?
-If Job, Whether in Govt. Sector/ Private Sector/ Academics/ Entrepreneurship?

So the earlier you are able to figure out the answers, the more the time you have to pursue activities towards the Goal. So Start jotting what you want to be? It is  up to   YOU and You only can define what you want to be. Once you are clear then you can focus on steps to pursue your ambitions passionately.
