Benevolence
Meditations , Marcus Aurelius , Book 9 : pg. 57To a man, a service - without seeking to be paid for it
Nor to blame others, who received a service -
is to be ungrateful
- just as if the eye demanded compensation for seeing
-feet for doing the walking
so also a man is formed by Nature
to perform acts of benevolence
When she has done anything benevolent
or in any other way conducive to common interest
he has acted conformably to his constitution
and he gets what is his own!
